Life in Haiti
Haiti is NOT recommended for relocation. The US State Department maintains a Level 4 Do Not Travel advisory β the highest level. Since the assassination of President Jovenel MoΓ―se in 2021, Haiti has descended into a gang-controlled crisis: armed gangs control an estimated 80% of Port-au-Prince, the government has no effective control of the capital, kidnapping for ransom targeting foreigners is common, and basic services have effectively collapsed. The country was already the Western Hemisphere's poorest nation before the 2010 earthquake; it has not recovered. The US Embassy has extremely limited capacity to assist Americans. Haiti is included for completeness β it holds real historical significance as the world's first Black republic and has extraordinary natural beauty in its north.
Currently dangerous for all foreigners and specifically for Americans, who are high-value kidnapping targets. Do not travel to Haiti under any circumstances under the current security situation.
